Interrupted Tapered Pipe Tap
Reduce flank friction, permit better lubrication and allow more room for chip removal. The taper on NPT threads allows them to form a seal when torqued as the flanks of the threads compress against each other, as opposed to Parallel/Straight thread fittings or compression fittings in which the threads merely hold the pieces together and do not provide the seal.
Shops might use Interrupted Tapered Pipe taps in high-hardness materials and where reduced cutting torque is required.
"But, as a General rule, the taps are ideally suited for low-tensile materials because the tap provides more space for chips and, in particular, more space for lubricant."
